Leech Therapy – Vedic Chikitsa
Leech therapy, also known as Jalaukavacharana, is an ancient Ayurvedic practice used for detoxification and improving blood circulation. This Vedic chikitsa (treatment) involves the controlled application of medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) to draw impure blood, relieve pain, and promote healing.
Leeches secrete bioactive compounds such as hirudin, which acts as a natural anticoagulant, preventing blood clotting and improving circulation. When applied to the skin, leeches extract stagnant blood, reducing inflammation and enhancing tissue regeneration.
Pain Relief – Effective in treating arthritis, joint pain, and migraines.
Skin Disorders – Helps in managing eczema, psoriasis, and acne by detoxifying the skin.
Varicose Veins & Blood Disorders – Improves circulation and prevents clot formation.
Wound Healing – Enhances recovery from non-healing wounds and diabetic ulcers.
Detoxification – Removes toxins and purifies the blood.
A trained therapist selects healthy, sterile leeches and places them on affected areas. The leech attaches itself and sucks blood for about 20–45 minutes before detaching naturally. The wound is then cleaned and dressed.
Leech therapy should only be performed by qualified practitioners to avoid infections and complications. It is not recommended for individuals with severe anemia, hemophilia, or weakened immunity.
Leech therapy, a time-tested Ayurvedic practice, is gaining recognition for its natural healing properties. With its ability to treat various ailments holistically, Jalaukavacharana continues to be a powerful component of Vedic chikitsa.
