Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, poses significant challenges to patients' quality of life due to its debilitating symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. While there is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease, treatment strategies aim to manage symptoms effectively and improve patients' functional abilities.
Medication remains the cornerstone of Parkinson's disease management. Dopamine replacement therapies, such as levodopa/carbidopa, are commonly prescribed to alleviate motor symptoms by replenishing dopamine levels in the brain. However, long-term use may lead to motor fluctuations and dyskinesias, necessitating adjustments in dosage or the addition of other medications like dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors, or COMT inhibitors to optimize symptom control.
