Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), also known as Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD), is a common hormonal disorder that affects individuals assigned female at birth. This condition is characterized by an imbalance in reproductive hormones, leading to various symptoms and potential long-term health implications. Women with PCOS often produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens, the male hormones, which can result in the development of small cysts on the ovaries. One of the hallmark features of PCOS is irregular menstrual cycles. Women with PCOS may experience infrequent or prolonged periods, or they may even skip periods altogether. This irregularity is often linked to the lack of regular ovulation, which can impact fertility. Additionally, the elevated androgen levels can contribute to the development of physical symptoms such as acne, excessive facial and body hair (hirsutism), and male-pattern baldness.
